The U.S. Army’s 8th Field Hospital becomes operational at Nha Trang. It provides both medical care and medical logistics. It serves as the primary treatment facility for U.S. military personnel in South Vietnam until 1963, when the Navy establishes its own facility in Saigon. The 8th Field Hospital receives support from the 57th Medical Detachment (Helicopter Ambulance), which is equipped with UH-1 “Huey” helicopters. The 57th’s first rescue mission takes place on May 12, 1962.1
