The first contingent of combat troops from Australia arrives in South Vietnam aboard the HMAS Sydney as part of the 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR). The rest of the 1RAR arrives by air. The 1RAR consists of approximately 1,400 troops attached to the U.S. 173d Airborne Brigade stationed near Bien Hoa Air Base. It includes one combat infantry battalion, a signal unit, and other elements.1
