Task Force 117, the Mobile Riverine Force, becomes operational. It is a joint U.S. Army-Navy task force whose goal is to search out and eliminate Viet Cong elements along the Mekong Delta’s many waterways. During operations, Navy gunboats and landing craft offload Army infantry units in amphibious assaults on enemy positions in the delta. The task force is disestablished in 1969.1
