Philippine Civic Action Group Arrives in Vietnam
August 16, 1966
Advance elements of the Philippine Civic Action Group, Vietnam (PHILCAG), arrive in Tay Ninh Province to survey land for a base camp and to coordinate the transportation of the remainder of PHILCAG to Vietnam. Philippine Civic Action teams begin providing medical services for local civilians, treating an average of 2,000 patients weekly. Filipino engineers also construct public works and utilities and participate in additional civic action projects. The 2,000-man PHILCAG is eventually complemented by an artillery battalion; an infantry security battalion; and 60 drivers, maintenance specialists, and cooks.1
