MACV officially activates Task Force OREGON, which deploys to I Corps. The task force consists of multiple existing U.S. Army units from across South Vietnam. It replaces some Marines in southern I Corps, who move farther north to counter growing North Vietnamese threats near the DMZ. The task force conducts operations against guerrillas in the coastal plain and enemy bases in nearby mountains. Westmoreland later renames Task Force OREGON the 23d Infantry Division (Americal) on September 25.1
