U.S. Coast Guard Activates Tight Reign Navigation System
October 28, 1966
The U.S. Coast Guard-installed Long Range Aid to Navigation (LORAN) C station at Con Son becomes operational, activating Operation TIGHT REIGN. LORAN C stations create an electronic grid of radio waves over much of Southeast Asia. The Coast Guard’s LORAN stations will improve air and sea navigation in the absence of surface aids and in poorly charted waters.1
