Coast Guard Establishes Merchant Marine Detail, Saigon
July 1, 1968
The United States increasingly relies on hundreds of American merchant vessels to support operations. To manage these ships and their crews, the U.S. Coast Guard establishes Merchant Marine Detail, Saigon. The detail is attached to the U.S. Embassy. Coast Guardsmen assigned here resolve disputes and other problems involving the growing numbers of merchant seamen in Vietnam.1
