At a conference with South Vietnamese President Nguyen Van Thieu on Midway Island, President Nixon announces that the United States will withdraw 25,000 troops from Vietnam by the end of August. The first to leave are elements of the 3d Marine Division and the Army 9th Infantry Division. It is the first significant redeployment of American troops in the war.1
