The Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Trail is located in Price County and has 13 markers to represent the 13 years of service and sacrifice of the brothers and sisters in arms. The markers denote events of the war that were deemed important by Vietnam Veterans. The trail is a commemorative project to remind the public of the sacrifices made by this group of unheralded veterans.

Several North Alabama organizations are proud to be members of the Commemorative Partner Program. The partners have organized and have committed to hosting a lecture series for the next several years that highlights Vietnam veterans and their experiences from all services and all phases of the war. These events will feature a local Vietnam Veteran guest speaker and memorabilia displays. The purpose of these events is to recognize the contribution and sacrifices made by North Alabama Veterans and to help educate our young people about the Vietnam War. Dr. Lawrence Climo, a retired psychiatrist from Andover, MA served in Vietnam from 1966-1967 as an Army doctor in the Military Provincial Hospital Augmentation Program, a State Department sponsored counterinsurgency program. He will talk about his unique and problematic wartime mission as an Army doctor working in the Vietnamese Health Service treating civilians, including the occasional soldier, North Vietnamese or Vietcong, who came to him for illnesses, not war wounds.

Our initial 'event' in the community to bring attention to the 50th anniversary celebration. The library will be displaying this all month long in November to coincide with Veteran's day. Collected warm clothing (sweatshirts, Socks,fleece pants, scarves,gloves, hats) and food for the VA Clothes Closet and Food Pantry to give to Veterans (many are Vietnam Veterans)in need, both in-patients and out-patients. Many are homeless or living below the poverty line. The VA Social Workers and Volunteer Services Director handle the distribution.

Samuel Johnston Chapter Members are encouraged to knit and crochet warm scarves for the annual "Knit Your Bit" campaign that is sponsored by the National WW 2 Museum in New Orleans. Chapter members donated 24 hand-made scarves which are given to elderly and hospitalized veterans in VA facilities nationwide. Many are veterans of the Vietnam War. This is a year-round project for several of our Chapter members.
