Our opening speaker Lt. General Mark Schmidt, USAF, Ret. will kick off our six part series honoring the 50th commemoration of the Vietnam War. The first symposium will focus on an introduction to the war; led by Captain John Sterling, USMC, Ret. who served in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne and 3rd Marine Division. Interactive exhibits, to remain throughout the series, will include a bunker, educational panels, artifacts, and maps. Topics will include a historical perspective on the war, war dissenters, national strategy, containment, statistics, myths, “Nam speak,” and Hollywood’s version of Vietnam. Captain Sterling will share his experiences of being a young man working as a teacher one day and dropped into the middle of a war the next. Lectures will include PowerPoint visuals and movie/documentary clips. There will be a Q&A session at the conclusion.
