Vietnam Veterans May 3rd Commemorative Event
On May 3, 2015, on the USS Yorktown at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, SC, we held our last meeting of the year. This was an exciting event in that we honored Vietnam Veterans and installed a new chapter board.
Commemorative Events committee had a wonderful ceremony recognizing those men and women who bravely aided and fought in the Vietnam War. Although, it has been 50 years, since this event, our chapter felt the need to give recognition to those veterans who had never received this during their original homecoming.
The speakers were both veterans of the Vietnam War. One was a helicopter pilot and the other a Naval officer who served aboard the USS Picking.
Cherise Sickles sang the National Anthem and the Armed forces Hymn
The chapter provided wonderful black and white enlarged photos of each branch of the service that served in Vietnam. They also had replicas of dog tags and a gorgeous cake commemorating the event. The battle ensign that was flown over the USS Picking, DD685, during one of the engagements of the war was on display. Several the crewman of the Picking were guests. All branches of the military and their families were recognized, thanked and honored for their service. Kathy Woolsey provided the beautiful flower arrangements and the wreath that was laid by new Chaplain, Claudia Farmer’s father, at the conclusion of the ceremony.
