The first ever Vietnam Veterans Commemoration held by the General Macomb Chapter of the National Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) and co-hosted by the Macomb American Legion Post #6, and Macomb VFW #1921 was very much a success. The event drew nearly 300 participants and attendees including Mayor of Macomb, Micheal Inman and State Representative Norine Hammond. One hundred and twenty veterans were honored, receiving the gratitude of our grateful community and our country. In addition to the material provided by The United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration, the Daughters of the American Revolution presented the honorees with an NSDAR Vietnam War Veteran Certificate. Our guest speaker was William Albracht, the youngest Captain to command combat troops during the Vietnam war, a highly decorated Veteran of the war, and author of the book "Abandoned in Hell." Several of the honorees mentioned the connection, or bond, they felt with Albracht. Some mentioned that all in all it was a "healing experience." The event was covered by the local newspaper, Macomb "The Voice". Headlines, "Welcome Home. Vietnam Veterans honored during war's 50th anniversary ceremony." Commentary, "An overdue Appreciation." Letter to the editor from a Vietnam veteran who was honored at the ceremony. "The certificates and lapel pin presentation was uplifting; the big smiles and kind words were very much appreciated. The closing words "Welcome Home" was appreciated most of all." The Bushnell, Il newspaper, "The McDonough Democrat also had articles of the event in their paper. A fellow Vietnam veteran presented other veterans with a denim quilt embroidered with a "Thank you" and an American Flag that he makes. There are about 400 Vietnam veterans in McDonough County. Through newspaper articles, posters, and word of mouth, 147 Vietnam veterans or their families contacted us with their information, however, 120 confirmed they would attend the ceremony. Overall, a huge success.

To Honor Vietnam Veterans and their families and present each Vietnam Veteran with a certificate of appreciation for their service and to say "Welcome Home". The Commemoritive Flag will be displayed. The event was a wonderful success. We were so pleased with such a good turnout for a small town and rural area. Our main objective was to honor and Thank the Vietnam War Veterans regardless of whether they served in theater or in country. We believe we accomplished that objective. We had several stand up at the end of the program and tell us that they really appreciated being thanked for their service and that they felt honored to be singled out as a group. Several thanked us with tears in their eyes and of course in ours. We asked that the veteran's name, rank and branch and years of service be sent in by email or by phone to the Chapter Regent. This information was needed to print the certificates ahead of the event date. The response was wonderful. We also printed a few with just the chapter name so we could hand write in the veterans name and branch of service. We had only 3 veterans that came that had not sent in their information. The weather was bad that day so we were thrilled with the turnout. Claiborne Parish Chapter members received such a blessing from this event. It was by far the most wonderful event we have had a part in.

Since these will be informal get-togethers, I do not need lapel pins at this time. I already have 2 meetings in the scheduling stage. Note: This is how I was told to request these items since I don't have an actual event at this time.

The monthly meeting was entitled "Vietnam, My Experience - Looking in the Rearview Mirror" and included a guest speaker, Ron Trewyn. The program was informative as to life in Vietnam and the hardships faced when returning home to a negative reception, which Mr. Trewyn endured by proudly wearing his stripes. Mr. Trewyn said that having a positive attitude made a difference in survival which he has found to be a truism in life. Names and military information of many relatives and friends of the chapter who served were read aloud. All material was distributed to chapter members and family members in attendance. Beaverton Post #124 is refurbishing and relocating one of the oldest Vietnam Veterans Memorials in the United States. The Memorial, dedicated in June 1968, lists all the Oregonians killed in the war as of the date of dedication, many added later. The building where this memorial was for almost fifty years had sold and the remodeling put the memorial in harms way. The Beaverton Post has removed the Memorial from its old location and it is safely stored. The Post is presently securing funds to build the Memorial's permanent home in our Veterans Memorial Park. This is an expensive project, approx $130,000. We have secured $63,000 to date but we are reaching out to the community, organizations and corporations for financial help. Please visit our website for more information: www.beavertonpost124.org .

As an added benefit to this particular game, the kickoff flyover is scheduled to include 2 F4s which powerfully represent that generation of heroes. The recognition timing will occur within the first half of the game (exact TBD), and will include a jumbotron display provided by the commemoration. Mr. Steve Goddard, a Vietnam veteran, and personal friend to one of our members, gave a moving and informative speech about his time in the Vietnam War. He then graciously answered many questions. We then presented Mr. Goddard with a flag, pin, stickers, a presidential proclamation, and a gift certificate donated by our chapter members, followed by a luncheon. Many of our members commented that Mr. Goddard's talk was very interesting and heart wrenching at the same time. We were pleased to fulfill objective #1 by thanking and honoring Mr. Goddard through our presentation of the commemoration items and having him as the guest of honor at the luncheon. She also talked about he Women's Vietnam Memorial. The three women were: 1) Barbara McDaniels: DAR member; born on Ohio; volunteered to be a Donut Dollie for the Red Cross in Vietnam from 1969-1970 2) First Lieutenant, Sharon Ann Lane: born in Ohio; went to Vietnam in 1969 as an Army nurse; only U.S. service woman to be killed in action in Vietnam; honored by the DAR as their 1969 Outstanding Nurse of the Year; posthumously awarded the DAR Anita Newcomb McGee medal in 1970 (Dr. McGee was a founding member of the DAR and played an important role in founding the U.S. Army Nurse Corps) 3) Captain Elizabeth Marie Wilson: went to Vietnam from 1969-1970 as an Army nurse; sister of the speaker Four of the members in attendance had family members that served in Vietnam during the war. Seven Vietnam-era veterans were honored with a DAR certificate of appreciation and also received a copy of the presidential proclamation, bumper sticker, button, and the official bronze Vietnam veteran lapel pin provided by the 50th Vietnam Commemoration Committee. Myself and three other members of our chapter traveled to the John J. Lynch Veterans Place. It serves as a residence for homeless veterans, some of whom suffer from PTSD or addiction issues. There are approximately 22 veterans at this shelter, most of them veterans of more recent wars. We came to present awards to the seven Vietnam veterans, but following that, all of the veterans were invited to join in the deli luncheon the chapter had brought to celebrate the event. The chapter had brought with us three six-foot long hero sandwiches, tossed salad, potato salad, coleslaw, macaroni salad, veggies and dip, pickles, potato chips, and soda/bottled water. In addition, there were several homemade desserts and Italian cookies. Members of my chapter were happy to have the opportunity to honor our Vietnam veterans, who seemed moved and surprised to receive their awards. I overhead one gentleman say he might hang it on the wall in his room. Everyone attending appeared to enjoy the food as well. To others, I would say that in honoring our homeless veterans, you will come away from the event feeling moved and honored to have met them. These men stepped out and answered the call of their country when they were asked. For our homeless veterans who have struggled with PTSD or addiction, this event had real meaning and allowed them to see themselves as appreciated members of our society. We asked the organization who runs the shelter for their names and branch of service for the Vietnam veterans so that their certificates could be personalized in advance. Their names were called and they each came up to receive their certificates. The vets most certainly enjoyed their luncheon.
