In commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War, RHCR Theatre and the Veterans Memorial Commission will bring to the stage, “Iowa Stories: the Vietnam Experience” (IAS). The play was originally written in 1990 by University of Northern Iowa Communication professor, Marilyn Shaw. A decade and-a-half ago Professor Shaw, “saw a lack of recognition and awareness of the experiences that the men and women soldiers of the Vietnam War era received.” By engaging and recording the experiences of military personnel—in particular Iowa Veterans who served during the Vietnam War—Professor Shaw gained in-depth knowledge and a better understanding of the contributions and sacrifices allowed. The encounters shape the performance. IAS tells different perspectives of the same story by cleverly constructing Shaws’ interviews of twenty-seven Vietnam War Veterans. The performance follows the journey from enlistment and/or draft, to basic training, in country experience, and the aftermath. The play consists of nine characters: six men and three women. Each part is double-cast with a “young” version depicting memories and an “older” version representing the Veteran in present day. Teri Van Dorston, Assistant Director of the Veterans Memorial Commission comments: “We are thrilled to hold the performance of this important and timely production. It is an extreme compliment to the Commissions’ Vietnam exhibition that will also be open for theater-goers to view. Iowa Stories: the Vietnam Experience adds a verbal and visual dimension to the education and understanding of what our Veterans endured 50 years ago.”

Beaverton Post #124 is refurbishing and relocating one of the oldest Vietnam Veterans Memorials in the United States. The Memorial, dedicated in June 1968, lists all the Oregonians killed in the war as of the date of dedication, many added later. The building where this memorial was for almost fifty years had sold and the remodeling put the memorial in harms way. The Beaverton Post has removed the Memorial from its old location and it is safely stored. The Post is presently securing funds to build the Memorial's permanent home in our Veterans Memorial Park. This is an expensive project, approx $130,000. We have secured $63,000 to date but we are reaching out to the community, organizations and corporations for financial help. Please visit our website for more information: www.beavertonpost124.org .

Kenton County Veterans Memorial Park
Veteran's Drive

We partnered with Kenton County Veterans Memorial Park for their 2015 Veterans Day service. Our chapter presented this park and the city of Crescent Springs with a Vietnam War veterans flag that came in the original partner package. A wreath was laid upon the granite wall, where 49 names of Kenton County KY casualties of the Vietnam War, was etched. Two living Vietnam War veterans read aloud those names in remembrance. In the future, I will write an article for the local newspaper and attempt to get the information out to the community prior to a local city event. This was an event that is held yearly and those who attend are already aware. Since the veterans are the deceased, it would have been nice to get an article out in advance to appeal to their family. Those who had passed away on the soil of Vietnam, at the time, were very young and their family members are more likely passed away by now. It was a dignified, respectful event with a priest, pastor, singer of patriotic songs, community leaders, and two officers of the DAR.

One day each week the table had chapter representatives who greeted the library patrons and spoke with the Vietnam Veterans thanking them for their service. Our last meeting had a somber setting. The soft gray overcast sky, damp cold and piercing wind gave the perfect setting to remember the hardships that our American servicemen and women have endured in order to preserve what we all hold so dear. We commemorated and honored the veterans of all wars ,declared or not ,fought by our brave countrymen. The Chapter was fortunate to have Colonel Myron Harrington, who received the Navy Cross and Silver Star for heroism at the Battle of Hue City in Vietnam, as a speaker. Selfless and humble he chose to speak of a cadet from the Citadel that gave his all and did not return from war. It was poignant and he ended with a thought provoking poem. The Eliza Lucas Pinckney Chapter presented him with a certificate honoring his service. Bonnie Wade, founder of “Dear Vietnam Vet” also spoke briefly and gave homage to Col Harrington and all Vietnam Veterans. At the end of her presentation she gave Col. Harrington a hand written letter from her foundation.
