Dinner and eagle pin ceremony. The event was a great success. Veterans were welcomed by Cheryl Metz from the Central Library who had invited a local band, Robert Reedy and the Old Time Pickers, to provide patriotic music. They did a tribute to the empty chair and to POWs and MIAs. They also played the music for each branch of service and those attending from the different branches stood while their song played. There was no one from the Coast Guard, but all the other branches were represented. Diana Tull, Commemorative Partner DAR Chairperson, highlighted the statistics of the Vietnam War and the service of the Armed Forces using material provided by the VWC. The 21 attending Vietnam veterans were individually called to the front with their names and dates of service and present with the eagle pin. They remained standing at the front for a group photo. Diana Tull also acknowledged the family members who supported the Armed Forces. After the program concluded, all the veterans (some in attendance were WWII and Korean War) and their family members were invited to a meal of fried chicken, potato salad, green beans, rolls, apple and pumpkin pies.

Beaverton Post #124 is refurbishing and relocating one of the oldest Vietnam Veterans Memorials in the United States. The Memorial, dedicated in June 1968, lists all the Oregonians killed in the war as of the date of dedication, many added later. The building where this memorial was for almost fifty years had sold and the remodeling put the memorial in harms way. The Beaverton Post has removed the Memorial from its old location and it is safely stored. The Post is presently securing funds to build the Memorial's permanent home in our Veterans Memorial Park. This is an expensive project, approx $130,000. We have secured $63,000 to date but we are reaching out to the community, organizations and corporations for financial help. Eric Welsh (US Army Retired), who volunteers as leader of a group program for veterans suffering with PTSD. Three Vietnam veterans were able to attend that day and were introduced, presented with DAR certificates, and thanked for their service. One Vietnam veteran was unable to attend at the last minute due to his wife's health emergency. All honored veterans expressed their appreciation of the DAR, our Ritual, and participation in this Commemorative Program. They seemed to enjoy our program and the luncheon that followed. The daughter of one veteran is a member of our chapter, and she shared a poster she made years before celebrating her father's service in Vietnam. I regret not ordering pins to present to the veterans in addition to our certificates.

The anniversary and veterans button pins were available for people interested to have, as well as, the bumper stickers, stick ons, and small American Flags. Supplies were replenished all through the month. One day each week the table had chapter representatives who greeted the library patrons and spoke with the Vietnam Veterans thanking them for their service. The Library staff said this was the best display they have ever had and so many people were interested in it! They have asked the chapter to do it again for the month of November 2016. Over 150 brochures were distributed, 150 bumper stickers, 200 stick ons and 300 button pins and 250 American Flags. All 50th anniversary commemoration items are gone! Lapel pins were only given to Vietnam Veterans on days a chapter representative was present and could actually thank the veteran for their service. 45 Lapel Pins were presented. This was a very successful display and objectives 1, 2, and 3 were met.

Following our "Plant a Flag for Freedom" Veterans Day event, we moved our exhibit of commemorative posters/fact sheets/flag/banner to the Mound/Minnetonka American Legion Post 398 and set it up in a prominent area in the dining room. The Legion Post sponsored a Veterans Day dinner for their members and guests. The "Thank You Vietnam Veterans" banner could be viewed from anywhere in the room. We consider this event to be success because everyone who attended the dinner saw the banner and commemorative flag; our goal to express appreciation for their service was fulfilled. The information found on the website was very helpful in creating this exhibit. We arrange for the "Thank You" banner to be created professionally using the commemorative seal. We enlarged some of the posters, mounted them on colorful poster board, and displayed them on easels. We inserted the fact sheets about the five military branches in individual folders for easier viewing. We also displayed the blue commemorative flag.
