On Friday, November 13, Take Me Home Huey will begin an exhibition at the Airbase Arizona Museum of the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) in Mesa, AZ. The “healing helicopter” will be on display to the public until late January 2016. Maloney’s Take Me Home Huey 42-foot long art installation combines a Huey helicopter used in Vietnam and turned into art for healing with a documentary film, a commissioned Take Me Home Huey song, a growing social media presence and website. A multi-media art project, Take Me Home Huey was created by the artist Steve Maloney from the remains of a UH-1H Huey helicopter that was shot down in 1969 during a medical rescue in Vietnam. The serial number of the Huey is 67-17174; the aircraft is commonly known as #174. The crew chief Gary Dubach and the medic Stephen Schumacher died bravely during the medical rescue attempt. The aircraft was found by Light Horse Legacy (LHL), a Peoria Az. based 501(c)3 non-profit focused on Post-Traumatic Stress. LHL researched, re-skinned and restored the helicopter for Maloney, who then repurposed it into art for healing. The CAF Airbase Arizona Aviation Museum is dedicated to preserving the history of those who have given so much to their country. The art sculpture will honor Vietnam veterans and will be appreciated by veterans and their families, art aficionados and history buffs alike. The museum is open daily from 10:00am – 4:00pm. The Take Me Home Huey art installation and self-guided tour via individual mobile phones at the CAF will be open to the public and free with entrance from 10:00am -4:00pm daily.

Congressman Miller joined together in appreciation of the Vietnam Veterans and their families for their service to our great Nation and in remembrance of those lost in that great campaign. Suzanne Terry, Chairman of the DAR Service to Veterans Committee, presented a certificate and label pin to each Vietnam Veteran as their names were announced and came forward. Certificates were presented to family members of 21 deceased veterans. Michael Cowley then sang a heartfelt rendition of “Bring Him Home”. Jennifer Emerson then sang “God Bless America”, and the Chaplain gave the benediction. A complementary luncheon of BBQ Ribs was enjoyed by all. Beaverton Post #124 is refurbishing and relocating one of the oldest Vietnam Veterans Memorials in the United States. The Memorial, dedicated in June 1968, lists all the Oregonians killed in the war as of the date of dedication, many added later. The building where this memorial was for almost fifty years had sold and the remodeling put the memorial in harms way. The Beaverton Post has removed the Memorial from its old location and it is safely stored. The Post is presently securing funds to build the Memorial's permanent home in our Veterans Memorial Park. This is an expensive project, approx $130,000. We have secured $63,000 to date but we are reaching out to the community, organizations and corporations for financial help. Please visit our website for more information: www.beavertonpost124.org .

Prior to the event, we mailed flyers to local VFWs, American Legions, Ruritan Clubs, etc. We also put up flyers in local businesses, libraries, and post offices. We ran articles in each of the four counties' newspaper and the local radio station read an announcement for 2 weeks before the event. Our chapter modeled the certificate that was given to us by your organization and made our own certificate and presented it, a Star for the Corp (which is a project of our State Regent), along with all the materials that you provided. The local hospice group gave each veteran and others present a Veterans Day prayer card and a pin of the West Virginia State flag and US flag. A local Boy Scout Troop presented and retired the colors during our program. A local middle school student sand the National Anthem. Our guest speaker was Colonel Joe Khare of Shpherdstown, WV. B.G. Earl Simms, a native of Moorefield, WV, also gave us some of the DoD blue folders and a very nice Vietnam veteran lapel pins for each of the veterans. We encouraged the veterans and their families to take the extra buttons and bumper stickers to other veterans that they may know. Our chapter chaplain and others paid a visit to the Veterans Hospital in Martinsburg, WV and will take extra things to Vietnam veterans there. All of the Vietnam veterans were given an opportunity to speak and then we enjoyed a time of refreshments and fellowship. I appreciate the help that you all gave us and feel that our event was very successful. I only wish that we would have had more veterans in attendance, but we are going to go into our communities and hand out our certificate and your materials to those we meet that were unable to attend. If you would like a copy of our program agenda or a copy of our certificate, please let me know.

One day each week the table had chapter representatives who greeted the library patrons and spoke with the Vietnam Veterans thanking them for their service. The Library staff said this was the best display they have ever had and so many people were interested in it! They have asked the chapter to do it again for the month of November 2016. Over 150 brochures were distributed, 150 bumper stickers, 200 stick ons and 300 button pins and 250 American Flags. All 50th anniversary commemoration items are gone! Belva Dawson and Richard W. Smith, veteran guest, led the National Anthem. Guest speakers were Richard and Nancy Morris, Raymore, MO. Nancy is Regent of the Prairie Chapter DAR and both are retired from the U.S. Navy. "The Veteran's Honor Flight to Washington D.C." was the topic of their very informative presentation. They both work closely with the "Honor Flight" and explained how the Vietnam Veterans can now be included in this Program. They concluded by distributing application forms and information leaflets to encourage interest in the Honor Flight Program. Two of the members present volunteered to help with the next Flight leaving Kansas City, MO in the summer of 2016. Refreshments were served following the presentation and everyone was thanked for their attendance and cooperation by Regent Jessie M. Smith. Due to the weather on the date of this meeting and other factors prior to the meeting, the attendance fell far below our expectations! However, those present were an excellent group of interested participants and the speakers, Richard and Nancy Morris, felt that it was a very worthwhile and rewarding meeting. The local newspapers gave us coverage - (included). Our next Vietnam Commemorative Event will be held on February 13, 2016, when the members of the American Legion will explain the Vietnam Commemorative Flag and we will honor our Vietnam Patriot of the Month!

Our chapter honored each Vietnam veteran who signed up with a formal ceremony. The SCDAR Veterans Chairman and Vietnam veteran, Delores Rucker, was our guest speaker for this event. The official Vietnam War Commemoration Emblem was projected onto a large screen behind the stage. Berkeley High School JROTC served as color guard. The Vietnam War Commemoration Flag was presented with colors. The Vietnam veterans were called onto a stage and presented by our chapter Regent with a certificate and Vietnam veterans lapel pin. As each name was called, his branch of service was announced. Following the ceremony, a reception was held. Multiple issues arose early on. Our chapter Vietnam Veteran Commemoration Committee Chairperson stepped down a few months prior to this event. A new Chairperson was quickly appointed. Arrangements to have the JROTC present colors, reception food, printing of certificates were done up until the last minute. Attempts to have a live singer for the National Anthem was unsuccessful. The event speaker, who lives approximately 2 hours from our town, notified our chapter Regent just days prior to the event that she would need to leave the event immediately after speaking. The speaker received a request to speak at another veterans' event that same day, and she also had to visit with a close family friend who was not expected to live. The JROTC instructor was unable to attend at the last minute due a family medical emergency. However, the Senior Cadet present took charge and lead the cadets in presenting the colors without fail. The young cadets mingled with the veterans after the ceremony and enjoyed hearing stories from them.
