The Nodaway Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution recognized Vietnam veteran Robert P. Westfall of Maryville as the February Patriot of the Month on Saturday, February 13, 2016. Robert entered the service in 1966 and was honorably discharged in August, 1968. He received several military honors, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and a Vietnam Campaign Medal. Regent Smith remarked that Mr. Westfall is truly an asset to our community by continuing to volunteer wherever and whenever needed and is committed to community services. The Nodaway Chapter is focused on recognizing veterans from the Vietnam War this year.
As part of the ceremony, members from Post #100 of the Maryville American Legion presented the Vietnam War Commemoration Flag.
The flag is part of an effort on behalf of the Department of Defense to provide the American public with materials and interactive experiences to educate people about the Vietnam War. The United States of America Vietnam Flag Commemorative began as part of the 2008 National Defense Authorization Act.
Each element of the flag commemorates different aspects of the war. for example, the outer black ring honors prisoners of war and those who were listed as missing in action. The six white stars at the bottom of the inner blue ring represent sacrifices made by U.S. allies Australia, New Zealand, Philippines, Republic of Korea, and Thailand. Plans are being made to frame the Vietnam Commemorative Flag and put it on display in the Nodaway County Administration Center.
Refreshments were served following the Program and everyone was thanked for their attendance and participation by Regent Jessie M. Smith.
This was a very rewarding meeting.
