12:00 AM - 12:00 AM
The crew of USS MILIUS is organizing a ceremony with a dual purpose of honoring our ship's namesake, CAPT Paul Milius, and commemorating Vietnam veterans. CAPT Paul Milius was a Navy pilot during the Vietnam War--on February 27, 1968, Milius and his crew were on an operational mission over Laos when his aircraft was hit. CAPT Milius took the controls, ordered his crew to bail out, and controlled the aircraft so his crew could escape. His entire crew was rescued. CAPT Milius was never recovered and was declared Missing in Action, and later, Presumed Killed in Action. Our intention is to hold the event on Friday, February 26th, as CAPT Milius went missing on February 27th. CDR Gilbert Ayan, MILIUS Commanding Officer, will be the event's first guest speaker and will invite the crew of MILIUS to reflect upon CAPT Milius' great sacrifice and parallel his courage to the ship's motto: Others Before Self. Following a remembrance of CAPT Milius' great service, CDR Ayan will award several Vietnam veterans, notably those from CAPT Milius' VO-67 squadron, with Vietnam Veteran Commemoration lapel pins and certificates. Following this commemoration of service, a VO-67 Vietnam veteran will speak to the crew about his experiences. The ceremony will conclude with cake and refreshments in Balboa Park Veteran Museum's Vietnam room.
