The Memorial, dedicated in June 1968, lists all the Oregonians killed in the war as of the date of dedication, many added later. The building where this memorial was for almost fifty years had sold and the remodeling put the memorial in harms way. The Beaverton Post has removed the Memorial from its old location and it is safely stored. The Post is presently securing funds to build the Memorial's permanent home in our Veterans Memorial Park. This is an expensive project, approx $130,000. We have secured $63,000 to date but we are reaching out to the community, organizations and corporations for financial help. To thank and honor Veterans of the Vietnam War, including personnel who were held as prisoners of war or listed as missing in action, for their service and sacrifice on behalf of the United States and to thank and honor the families of these veterans. To highlight the service of the Armed Forces during the Vietnam War and the contributions of Federal agencies and governmental and non-governmental organizations that served with, or in support of, the Armed Forces. Our event was more of a series of events which all turned out successfully and allowed us to properly thank many Vietnam Veterans in the community in addition to several Gold Star family members. This AAR specifically relates to the ceremony which my organization hosted. A couple issues were: Find a less controversial keynote speaker. The keynote speaker for the main ceremony was a Special Forces Vietnam Veteran and community leader, however he was very outspoken about his views on the War and the political climate in the country that contributed to the collapse of Republic of Vietnam. About half of Vietnam Veterans attending supported his views and the other half did not or were agnostic. A few Vietnam Veterans unfortunately got up and left.

The Doggers, a group of Vietnamese linguists (and newest member of The EC-47 History Site Commemorative Partner Program committee,) meet annually during the last week in April to commemorate the final days of operations prior to the fall of the Republic of Vietnam on April 30, 1975. Attendees include members of the many United States Air Force Security Service (USAFSS) units that provided signals intelligence tactical combat support during the Vietnam War. These include the 6994th, 6990th, 6924th, 6908th, 6988th, 6922nd, and 6987th Security Squadrons, and personnel who served with the National Security Agency, Joint Task Force-Full Accounting, and associated intelligence support activities. The purpose of this Fall of Saigon Party (FOSP) is to provide an annual opportunity for attendees to enjoy the company of their own "band of brothers" and to reminisce with old friends about the good and bad days of war. Time will be set aside to demonstrate heartfelt respect for those armed forces personnel of the Republic of Vietnam that we supported and served with during the war. We will also dedicate a moment of silence in reverence to those lost during the war and those who have died in the passing years. This year will be even more meaningful as we focus more clearly on The United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration (VWC) list of objectives. The theme of the entire event will be to say "Thank You" to Vietnam War era veterans and their families for their dedicated service, valor and sacrifice. A special "Welcome Home" rally will be organized to greet all veterans on the first day. Doggers who received their commemorative lapel pins at previous VWC events will serve as ceremony organizers, offer remarks, and present pins to all other eligible veterans attending. Other commemorative materials will be on display and available to family members and guests. Individual and group photos will be taken and included in the after action report. See attached AAR.

A multi-media art project, Take Me Home Huey was created by Light Horse Legacy partner artist Steve Maloney from the remains of a Huey helicopter that was shot down in 1969 during a medical rescue in Vietnam. The serial number of the Huey is 67-17174; the aircraft is commonly known as #174. The crew chief Gary Dubach and the medic Stephen Schumacher of the 15th Medical Battalion, 1st Cavalry Div. died bravely during the medical rescue attempt. The aircraft was found by Viet Nam War 50th Commemorative partner Light Horse Legacy (LHL), a 501(c)3 non-profit focused on Post-Traumatic Stress. LHL researched, re-skinned and restored the helicopter for Maloney, who then repurposed it into art for healing. Maloney’s Take Me Home Huey 42-foot long art installation combines a Huey helicopter used in Vietnam and turned into art for healing and to inspire conversation. The other elements of the art installation are a documentary film that is in the editing process, a commissioned Take Me Home Huey song as well as a detailed website with information about this particular Huey helicopter, the artist as well as resources about Post-Traumatic Stress (PTSD)along with the advances of air and medical technology. The helicopter’s history and artistic mission is significant; Take Me Home Huey honors Vietnam veterans, inspires conversation, promotes healing, and helps raise awareness for PTSD treatment services. The Nov. 2015 inaugural exhibition in Peoria, AZ reunited surviving 174 crewmembers and families connected to the aircraft. A time capsule in 174 preserves artifacts of the war for future generations, including a signed book by ex-POW Senator John McCain. The “healing helicopter” will be on public display February 18 thru April 30, 2016 at The Palm Springs Air Museum, Palm Springs CA: open daily from 10am to 5pm. A Guide by Cell exhibition guide accessed thru smart-phones enhances the installation

Our DAR Chapter is going to have a program we call "Commemoration on the Move". We will be obtaining names of Vietnam era Veterans in our community from our chapter membership. We will travel to these individuals homes to present them with certificates and other commemoration memorabilia. We will talk briefly with the veteran and family present about the purpose of the commemoration and officially welcome them home. This event was different in that it was not one big event. We located Vietnam veteran through our chapter's members. We traveled through our city visiting these veterans in their homes, or at a pre-determined location to thank them, present lapel pins and DAR certificates, a special letter from our Chapter Regent and other Commemorative information and materials. A short speech was made on the history of the 50th commemorative effort. This gave us the opportunity to visit veterans individually or in small groups, hear their stories and truly thank them. One of our chapter members reached out to about 30 of her former classmates who lived out of our local area. Many had not heard from her in years. They had marvelous conversations, each veteran truly expressing their gratitude that she had found them and told them about the Commemoration. Packages including all of the items listed below along with a special letter written by the Regent were mailed to each of them. Whether local or not, the gratitude expressed by all the veterans was overwhelming. Many said this is the first time anyone ever recognized them. Someone said the war was so long ago they don't think about it much anymore. Many thank you notes and letters were received. In times where various factors make it difficult to have a single large event, this method of reaching veterans truly worked and we would recommend it to other Commemorative Partners.

These pins will be used for pinning ceremonies to honor and thank Vietnam Veterans who are in hospice care with our organization. All Veterans we serve are recognized with a "thank you" flag-pinning ceremony to honor their service; it would be especially nice to have a specific pin for the Vietnam Veterans. We also attempt to have as many family members as possible present for these bedside pinning ceremonies: they are often quite emotional, as this is a final opportunity for the service of these brave men and women to be acknowledged. This event was a great success! We wanted to recognize our own five staff and hospice volunteers who are Vietnam Veterans, and we wanted to surprise them with the honor on Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day (March 30). The presentation of the Vietnam Veteran lapel pin, a personalized certificate and a bumper sticker. A special ceremony and reading were done at the beginning of a presentation on Honoring Veterans at the End of Life - a mandatory in-service for our hospice volunteers - that was intentionally scheduled on that date. We had asked the Veterans to be present just so we could introduce them to the group assembled for the program. Our CEO read a tribute to them, and they were pinned and thanked, and received a lengthy standing ovation from the crowd in attendance. The five Vietnam Veterans who were honored were Army (3) and Navy (2). Photos were taken and included in our organization's weekly newsletter distributed to 900+ staff and 1500+ volunteers.

Since late December 2015, Old 96 District Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution has been gathering the stories of local people who served in Vietnam. One member, Ann Ella Adams, has been interviewing these veterans (or widows) and writing their stories for publication in the Saluda Standard-Sentinel and the Edgefield Advertiser, the two newspapers that serve the Saluda and Edgefield County area of west central South Carolina. (Three veterans have written their own stories.) Publishing these stories has made the public aware of the tremendous service that these individuals provided to our country 50 years ago. Also, we have been told by a number of these people that the very act of recalling the service that they provided has helped them to verbalize their deeds in a way that nothing else has done before. Spouses and families have heard their stories recently as never before. Their fellow citizens also have been made aware of their sacrifices. We plan to honor them in late March or in April, as soon as we receive the pins from you.

April 30, 2016
12:00 AM - 12:00 AM

Washington,DC
20037

The purpose of the event is to conduct a Memorial Service and Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Vietnam Memorial and the Vietnam Women's Memorial on 30 April 2016 to honor those fallen in the Vietnam War. The date was selected to be on the 41st anniversary of the last day of deaths on the ground in Vietnam and the fall of Saigon, marking the end of the Vietnam War. Nine chapter members attended, including the Chapter's Regent, Vice-Regent, Historian, a past Regent, and five other members. The Regent, Susan Postle, led the ceremony with others taking active roles in the event. A list of facts about the Vietnam War was read, including the total number of veterans who served, the number of women who served, the number of names of the fallen listed on the Vietnam Memorial Wall, and the number of those who were POWs and Missing in Action. A list of facts about the Vietnam Women's Memorial was also read to honor and memorialize those who served and died in the Vietnam War. A wreath was then lain at the Vietnam Memorial and a wreath and fresh flowers were lain at the Vietnam Women's Memorial. A chapter member's son played TAPS on a bugle to close the ceremony. Lessons learned: We had to pay $120 to reserve space for the event to the National Park Service (NPS), however, NPS was extremely slow in sending us information and approval for the event. In fact, they did not send us the approval or information on the restrictions until 2 days before the event, despite us submitting the request almost 2 months in advance and calling them weekly for an update on the status. We had to adapt our plans quickly based on the location and the restrictions imposed, and by that time it was too late to invite guests. Not sure how we could improve this for future events.

Community will be present to meet and greet the veterans that gave their all during the Vietnam conflict. The event was a success because objective was fulfilled. One of the objectives was to have Veterans feel Welcomed Home. Throughout the event Veterans were commenting that, "it feels like a Big Homecoming." Families were appreciative of the efforts of the staff putting the event together for their love ones. Also, throughout the event, staff were interacting with Veterans and family thanking them for their great service and sacrifice for this Country. One factor that was helpful to the success of the event was sponsorship where food and door prizes were abundant. All Veterans received a door prize and DJ was able to keep the 60s and 70s music going throughout the event. Allowing the Veterans to experience some of the music they enjoyed when they were young was a positive factor in the success of the event.

One chapter member traveled to several towns in Vermont to individually present the NSDAR Certificate of Appreciation, official Vietnam Lapel Pin and packets of stickers, Proclamation, Fact Sheet, buttons to Vietnam era veterans. One was a surprise presentation to a woman veteran after she was a speaker at our April chapter meeting. Many were witnessed by immediate family members. Three were presented posthumously. A few were mailed after contacting recipients. Every veteran showed their appreciation for being recognized, no matter where their service had been performed during that era. Some provided contact information for others to be recognized. Many were surprised to hear about this program. Information has been submitted for publication in the chapter and state DAR newsletters. NOTE: I finished using up supplies left over from our other two events and have counted them in the totals shown below. In some instances we had received a different number of items than initially requested, so some discrepancy in matching quantities.

This event is designed to honor those Veterans who served in Vietnam and to acknowledge this date as the Fall of Saigon. The Albuquerque Chapters of the DAR is supporting this event principally sponsored by the NM Veterans Memorial. The three Albuquerque Chapters of the DAR acted in a supportive back-up role to the NM Veterans Memorial in handing out lapel pins and VWCP packages to the twenty-or-so Vietnam Vets who showed up to the Fall of Saigon Event on the 30th of April. There were sandwiches and refreshments served in the Visitors Center after a half-dozen Veterans shared their experiences in the Rose Garden of the Memorial. One of the people attending the refreshment part of the day was a journalist from KNME, Michael Kamen, who is working on a PBS documentary on the experiences of Hispanic and Native American Vietnam Vets. This might be an interesting project to follow... I am attaching both the ABQ Journal article about this event and the poem "What War Is" that was written and read by Don Loftis, a Vietnam Vet who is on the Board of Directors of the NM Veterans' Memorial.

In partnership with Operation Gratitude and Veteran’s Service Organizations in Kansas City we are going to honor our Vietnam Veterans at the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial Fountain at 1330, with care packages. Due to inclement weather, the event site (originally: Vietnam Veteran Memorial Fountain in downtown Kansas City, MO) was relocated to an indoor venue (VVA 317's event hall). This announcement came a few hours prior to the start of the event. The Welcome Home ceremony began at 1330. BG (Ret) John Rose provided a 10 minute speech. Special guests included: 1) Medal of Honor Recipient and Vietnam Veteran, Col (Ret) Donald Ballard; 2) Councilwoman, Heather Hall. Attendance was below expectation, but we believe this was due to the inclement weather and subsequent event site relocation. However, we provided ample information about the VWC to those in attendance who were not familiar with our office and mission. Additionally, 12 civilian applications were provided to various attendees who are interested in having their VSO join as Commemorative Partners. With our support of this event, we advanced our influence in the Kansas City metro area. Commemorative Partners that Co-Hosted: 1) Crossroads Hospice of Kansas City; 2) VVA Chapter 243. Future consideration: support as Materials Only.
