12:00 AM - 12:00 AM
On May 13, 2017, members of the Missouri State Society Daughters of the American Revolution (MSSDAR) Midwest District Chapters supported the Honor Flight Network of Kansas City (HFNKC) at a Meet and Greet Luncheon. This luncheon provided an opportunity for the 57 veterans from World War II, Korean, and the Vietnam War who were preparing to travel on the Honor Flight, scheduled for May 18, 2017. During the luncheon, the veterans met their guardians and received important information regarding their trip.
Westport, William Boydston, and Prairie Chapter members decorated tables with red, white, and blue flowers and patriotic decorations. As the veterans and their family members arrived, our members greeted them and assisted with their seating. Prior to the meal, Cheryl Compton, a Prairie Chapter member, gave the blessing.
After opening ceremonies, a meal was dished and served to around 200 attendees by the chapter members along with students from the North Kansas City High School. During the meal, a ceremony was coordinated and led by the MSSDAR to honor each veteran with the presentation of a certificate of appreciation and service war pin for each World War II and Korean War veteran. Vietnam War veterans were presented with a certificate of appreciation, decals, pins, and a DOD lapel pin provided by the 50th Vietnam War Commemoration.
Corinne Rathmann, an Alexander Doniphan Chapter member, wrote over 75 letters for the “Mail Call.” “Mail Call” occurs during the return trip home when each veteran receives a very large envelope of many, many letters of thanks and appreciation from family, friends, and school children.
Alexander Doniphan Chapter provided the snack bags for the trip. The snack bags contain items for the veterans and guardians to snack on throughout the day while touring their memorials.
