The program is designed to help Americans understand that their Navy is deployed around the world, around the clock, ready to defend America at all times. Navy Weeks focus a variety of outreach assets, equipment and personnel on a single city for a week-long series of engagements with key influencers and organizations representing all sectors of the market. During a Navy Week, 75-100 outreach events are coordinated with corporate, civic, government, education, media, veterans, community service and diversity organizations in the city. The Blue Angels, the Navy Parachute Team, Navy bands, Navy divers, namesake ship and submarine crews, hometown Sailors, medical personnel, environmental displays, USS Constitution Sailors and equipment, and Navy recruiting properties all participate in the Navy Week program.

Various Educational Meetings (12:00 AM - 12:00 AM)
Event's details

Various locations throughout Iowa

50261

We had separate meetings with Vietnam Veterans on 43 different occasions and locations. These are small encounters – sometimes a small group plans an event (too small to call an event) or it is an accidental meeting. These occur throughout Iowa as we carry them with us at all times. One of our Chapter members volunteers at the VA Hospital. Another person is a truck driver and meets a variety of folks. With Iowa being such a rural state and not all Veterans belong to a Veterans group, it is imperative that we recognize them where and when we can. This count is only for events not covered under a separate event where a Before Event form is completed.

Vietnam War Exhibit (12:00 AM - 12:00 AM)
Event's details
May 20, 2017-May 29, 2017
12:00 AM - 12:00 AM
Matthews Community Center
100 W McDowell St
Matthews,NC
28105

The Exhibit was acquired from the Charlotte Metrolina MOAA. The MVAC and American Legion Post 235 hosted the event. The Vietnam War Exhibit loaned to the MVAC was well prepared and meaningful to the visitors from Matthews and the Charlotte area. The Exhibit provided a good, yet simplified view of the War. A map of the countries involved in the War, which allowed veterans to place pins in locations in which they had served, allowed for personal reflections and an opportunity for others to observe the locations. Visitors commented positively on the posters that showed the service patches and commands of the five services that were involved in the War directly. The MVAC added information and displays such as newspaper clippings from the war, and a short history and photos of the war from 1954 to 1975. Serving as a backdrop were 20 historical US flags from the colonial to the present on loan from the local Air Guard. A PBR model was loaned to the Exhibit by a local citizen. A superb poster advertising the Exhibit was designed by an MVAC member. The MVAC observed some opportunities for the future: 1. Insufficient advertising and announcing of the Exhibit prior to the start may have limited a larger draw of people. 2. Although the press release was helpful, an earlier release to the press and of posters in each business announcing the Exhibit may draw more visitors. 3. No outside signs announcing the Exhibit were available for first few days. A total of four to five signs will be provided if the Exhibit is shown in the future. 4. The MVAC should also request Matthews residents who have meaningful Vietnam War items for display in addition to the excellent items from the Vietnam War Exhibit. A second room may be required for the display in the Community Center. The Vietnam War Exhibit received excellent support by the Town of Matthews Mayor, Town Manager, Town Council and the Community Center. The remaining pins were returned.

We have been reaching out at local event shows, specifically gun shows and car shows with an outreach table and identifying Vietnam Veterans, telling them about the Commemorative pin and welcoming them home. Our members also carry pins so they can give pins to Vietnam Veterans that they meet in group sessions, restaurants, airports etc. We have found that Vietnam Veterans may not want to come to an event to honor them, so we go where the veterans are.
