We want to be able to do the same whether they are able to attend the event or not. Complete program, celebrating the era. Walking in we printed all posters from partner portal for the veterans to look at. Michigan National Guard, had 3 volunteers in dress blues to usher people to their seats. We did have a local newspaper in attendance. As they were seated music/military videos of the era were playing on the big screen. Complete program agenda attached. All attendees were very pleased. Response from 3 of the 5 local veterans lost in the war. Did have videos to play between speakers. After Action Review: - Not enough time to look at posters of info before ushers put them in seats. - Request RSVP from the very beginning for vets in attendance - Prior rehearsal, even though it could not have ran better - Prior instruction to speakers pertaining to mic and audio equipment - Better coordination of volunteers to set up/tear down event

"More Than Self: Living the Vietnam War" is an exhibition based on over 650 veteran oral history interviews preserved in the Atlanta History Center's Veterans History Project. Accompanying the interviews are dozens of compelling photographs and artifacts that illustrate the realities of war. Artifacts include an AR-15 rifle, a Viet Cong hand grenade, and a Montagnard crossbow crafted by native Vietnam inhabitants. The three demonstrate the distinct differences in weapons and combat techniques used by enemies and allies. Photographs of Red Cross “Donut Dollies” near the front lines and a box of C-rations provide a glimpse into the daily life of the men and women in country. A nurse’s boonie hat illustrates her account of protecting severely wounded men while under attack in an evacuation hospital. A telegram notifying a navigator’s wife that her husband’s B-52 was shot down and the striped garment he wore when imprisoned in the Hanoi Hilton remind visitors of the brutality suffered by those who fell into enemy hands. In the U.S., images of protesters in Atlanta's Piedmont Park and a welcome-home sign propped against the front of a serviceman’s home provide two perspectives on the American public’s support for the war. First-hand accounts of verbal and physical assaults on returning veterans expose the treatment of those lucky enough to make it home. This exhibit honors those who served, recognizes the sacrifices of their family members, and encourages all veterans to share their story with the Veterans History Project.

Photographs are a powerful part of our collective memory of the Vietnam War. Many of the iconic photographs were taken by photojournalists working for newspapers, magazines, or wire services. But there were also military photographers in Vietnam serving in our armed forces. They took thousands of photographs that covered every aspect of the conflict—photographs that are now part of our National Archives. Their assignments sent them everywhere: the jungles and swamps, forward bases, hospital ships, rivers, and air bases. Unsanitized and uncensored, these indelible images give an intimate and ground up view of the war and those who fought it. In conjunction with the special exhibit Remembering Vietnam in Washington, DC, the National Archives presents the traveling exhibition Picturing Nam, featuring some of the hundreds of thousands of photographs that military photographers stationed in Vietnam took to document American Armed Forces activities.

The event is a symposium that will focus on one of the most important battles in American history -- the Battle for Hue City. United States Marine Corps veterans and Navy Cross Recipients–retired Lieutenant General Ron Christmas, retired Colonel Myron Harrington, and retired Colonel Robert Thompson–will join Silver Star Recipient and retired Lieutenant Colonel Rob Black as they take part in a candid discussion of their roles in the pivotal Vietnam War Battle of Hue. Also featured on the panel will be John Olson, a military photographer who spent three days in Hue taking photographs for Stars and Stripes, a Department of Defense newspaper. Olson’s photographs were featured in Life Magazine and Olsen was awarded the Robert Capa Gold Medal for his iconic work. Photographs taken by John Olson at Hue will be on display at the symposium. The panel will discuss the situation in Vietnam before the Battle of Hue, the battle itself and the impact the change from jungle to urban warfare had on the U.S. military, and the change in media coverage and the resultant shift in support for the war on the homefront. The Battle of Hue gave journalists a closer look at war than had ever been granted before and it therefore gave Americans back at home a better understanding of the realities of the Vietnam War. As a result, despite winning the battle, support for the war waned more than ever before and the realities of war hit home. The symposium will honor the tremendous bravery and valor of the Marines and other service members who fought on the ground at Hue and also the importance of the journalists efforts to cover the story and provide an accurate picture of war to people worldwide.
