"The Moving Wall" is the half-size replica of the Washington, DC Vietnam Veterans Memorial and has been touring the country for thirty plus years. When John Devitt attended the 1982 dedication in Washington, he felt the positive power of "The Wall." He vowed to share that experience with those who did not have the opportunity to go to Washington. Devitt's idea was deeply personal. He had been out of work when the Wall was dedicated, and had made the trip with financial help from family and friends. "There were millions of people who would never be able to come to Washington," he realized, "I wanted them to be able see and feel what I had." His emotions ran deep. "Before 1982 I never felt like I needed a parade or a memorial," he says. He had come to the Wall expecting to dislike it, anticipating it would be as some media stories had said, "a black gash of shame." Instead, the Wall changed his life; it gave him a new mission and sense of pride in his military service. Students, in cooperation with faculty and veterans, will act as Visitor Guides at the Moving Wall. We envision their jobs will include helping to make visits more personal, meaningful, and comfortable, assisting visitors find names on The Moving Wall, building the foundation, setting up the wall, and keeping the area clean. However, the most important role the students will play is in assembling the Vietnam veterans who, if willing, will share their memories and personal commentaries about their experiences in Vietnam. The students will video record these oral histories so that they can be transcribed, indexed, and then placed in the school library as a primary resource for student research and historical preservation.

The Vietnam pin is given only to Vietnam veterans by a veteran. The individual pinning ceremonies include the pin, a pillow embroidered with "At Ease" on it, a flag stand, and an individualized certificate. When possible, the Quilts of Valor is also included in the presentation to our individual hospice patients for private ceremony which includes the patient, the family members, and the staff of the facility. When the patient's spouse is included, we have been gifting him/her with the Poem for the Silent ranks. The surviving spouse pin would be greatly appreciated and used for these individual ceremonies as well as for the Veteran events in the communities as we often have surviving spouses which we recognize.

Our Chapter is focusing on service to veterans at this time. Each time we meet it seems that another member has met a Vietnam Veteran and wishes she could have honored him with a lapel pin. Some have been family members and some complete strangers. We have several public events in the near future and the Chapter Regent has asked that I request lapel pins so that we can have them available for any Vietnam Veterans who have not already received them. At our last board meeting we were standing in line to purchase lunch when one of us noticed a man wearing a Vietnam Veteran hat. She turned to him and said "Thank you for your service, Sir". He got tears in his eyes and said "No-one has ever said that to me!" When we sat down in the little meeting room to eat and continue our meeting the lady who had talked to him said she wished we had a pin to give him. I dug in my bag and sure enough, the last pin from our previous event was there and she took it and gave it to him. A bit later after he finished his meal he came into our meeting room and said, "Ladies, thank you so very much for the pin, and thank you for the service you are doing for veterans and for our country!" It was very touching for all concerned!
