Our Chapter is focusing on service to veterans at this time. Each time we meet it seems that another member has met a Vietnam Veteran and wishes she could have honored him with a lapel pin. Some have been family members and some complete strangers. We have several public events in the near future and the Chapter Regent has asked that I request lapel pins so that we can have them available for any Vietnam Veterans who have not already received them. At our last board meeting we were standing in line to purchase lunch when one of us noticed a man wearing a Vietnam Veteran hat. She turned to him and said "Thank you for your service, Sir". He got tears in his eyes and said "No-one has ever said that to me!" When we sat down in the little meeting room to eat and continue our meeting the lady who had talked to him said she wished we had a pin to give him. I dug in my bag and sure enough, the last pin from our previous event was there and she took it and gave it to him. A bit later after he finished his meal he came into our meeting room and said, "Ladies, thank you so very much for the pin, and thank you for the service you are doing for veterans and for our country!" It was very touching for all concerned!

Thursday, Jan. 24, Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum will open a new exhibition from the National Archives, Picturing Nam: U.S. Military Photography of the Vietnam War. Photographs are a powerful part of our collective memory of the Vietnam War. Military photographers stationed in Vietnam took thousands of photographs that covered every aspect of the conflict—photographs that are now part of our National Archives. Their assignments sent them everywhere: the jungles and swamps, forward bases, hospital ships, rivers, and air bases. Unsanitized and uncensored, these indelible images give an intimate and ground up view of the war and those who fought it. This exhibit runs through Sunday, March 31. The mission of this event is to educate the community about the Vietnam War and honor the veterans who fought in it. The traveling exhibit will be available to visitors for more than two months, including on Vietnam Veterans Day, March 29. We will offer free admission to Vietnam Veterans on that day and will pin vets who attend with official commemorative pins.

The traffic thru the museum on a daily basis is impressive and he is in process of assisting the Director on site to become a partner to continue this throughout the year. You will be receiving their application very soon. The volunteers that are there are realizing how much this means to the Veterans as they tour the museum to have a connection so personal and done with such respect that it is creating quite a wonderful happening for all who see and listen to the presentations. The attendance entry on this request is an average of visitors through the museum over a period of time. Honored and thanked hospice patients who are Vietnam War veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice during the Vietnam War era. Patients were all either home or bed bound with limited life expectancy and unable to attend public recognition events. For each patient - played service song, read and presented framed proclamation, presented Vietnam Veteran lapel pin and read fact sheet about design of pin. Saluted Vietnam War Veteran and thanked them for their service to their country and their respective service. For many, this was both the first time they were thanked for their service, for all it was the last as they all passed soon after the recognition. Several of the Vietnam veteran patients were not aware of the event, instead, it was primarily for the families and they were very appreciative. I have seen the Veteran label pin on the deceased at several funeral services and the framed proclamation prominently displayed. I believe the VWC program is a very worthwhile and meaningful program and I know it has made a difference to the Vietnam veterans and families I have had to privilege to recognize and thank.
