The City of Lake Charles Mayor’s Armed Forces Commission will host a “National Vietnam War Veterans Day” event on Saturday, March 30, at 10 a.m., at Veterans Memorial Park, located on the north side of the Civic Center grounds.
The event is being held to honor United States Armed Forces Vietnam War Veterans and will feature guest speaker Colonel William (Bill) S. Reeder, Jr., Ret. 361st AWC-AH-1G Cobra Pilot. A former prisoner of war, and author of Through the Valley: My Captivity in Vietnam, he will share his personal account of being the last United States Army Prisoner of War captured during the Vietnam War. Colonel Reeder spent 320 days in captivity.
Following the program, Mayor’s Armed Forces Commission members will distribute official 50th Commemoration pins to all Vietnam Veterans present. Three surviving spouses will be receiving pins and certificates.
The United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration defines a Vietnam War Veteran as United States Armed Forces personnel with active duty service years from November 1, 1955, to May 15, 1975, regardless of location of service.
Refreshments will be available following the ceremony and the public is encouraged to attend. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held inside the Lake Charles Civic Center on the second floor Mezzanine.
