Baldwin, Robert

Air Force

"I got invited to the Misty FAC reunion, and got to meet his wife and his daughters and stuff. And they come up to you, and hug you, and they'll say, thank you for letting me have my daddy back."

Description of Interview:

Bob Baldwin enlisted in the Air Force in 1961 at age 21, and by 1965 was “chomping at the bit to go” to Vietnam. After volunteering repeatedly, he was finally deployed to the 37th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron (ARRS) in Da Nang in 1967, where he served on numerous rescue and recovery missions as a flight engineer/flight mechanic with the Jolly Green Giants. Because they were flying so much, “We were divorced from the mechanical duties and just went into the operations side of the house.” He recalls his experience picking up Marines at Khe Sanh during Tet; he remembers snatching a Misty FAC pilot out of the water while under fire from the shore; he remembers the crash of Jolly Green 23, and their failure to rescue the downed A-4 pilot, callsign Hellborne-215; and he remembers rescuing Charles Lindbergh off the island of Mindanao in 1972. "What a gentleman. I got pictures of him.”
