Chang, John

Navy

"I knew I was going home in a body bag. I just knew I was not going to live. You know, that was going to be the way it was. And that was a good thing, 'cause knowing you're not going to make it, you don't [worry] about anything."

Description of Interview:

Navy corpsman John Chang tells the story of his military experience beginning with enlistment in the Navy at age 17. He was trained as a corpsman at Great Lakes and attended Field Combat Training at Camp Pendleton. He was assigned as a corpsman with the Fleet Marine Force (FMF), and served with Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment in I Corps. He describes protecting his feelings (“I learned not to know people well, not to get too friendly with people. Because it was going to be too tough … when you can't save them”), his views on the Marines (“Bravest guys I have ever met in my life, unbelievable. … Marines are the best trained military going in this world, and I was proud to serve with them”), being wounded (“twice by shrapnel, but not wounded at all at Hue City. … When God doesn't want you to get hurt, you don't get hurt”), caring for civilians and treating enemy soldiers (“after our people were taken care of, I patched up the North Vietnamese. They're human. They're people”), and escorting the body of his best friend home (“I was sitting in a hearse with my buddy's coffin in the back, riding back to New York City. It's a … hell of a way to come home”). He sums up his experiences thus: “There was no best day in Vietnam, I'm sorry. There was no best day in Vietnam, not for me.”
