Draper, David

Marines

"Most of our areas that we patrolled in Vietnam were not in range of artillery, but we did have fixed air support as long as the weather was fit. … We were supposed to be out there seeing, looking, seeing what we could find, but not being seen ourselves."

Description of Interview:

David Draper describes some of the differences between Marine Corps grunts and Force Recon Marines, the differences between C-rations and K-rations, the differences between good leadership and bad leadership. He explains why he loved walking point: “You're the first person to see anything … first person that's going to know that something's wrong.” And he describes a couple of difficult experiences. The first was just a few days after arriving in Vietnam when he was put on guard duty in a foxhole out on the perimeter with another Marine who had just arrived in country. “I spent all night seeing things move around out there…. And we were both petrified the whole night.” The other awful day was when he was told to “just shoot him,” referring to an enemy combatant they had already wounded too badly to bring him back for interrogation. David Draper loves Force Recon and loves the United States. “Too many men and women have died for our country to let people kneel before the flag and dishonor it,” he reckons.
