Army

"And my father looked down at the paper, and he said, you know child, if I be signing this piece of paper, you are going to war."

Description of Interview:

Donna Rowe grew up in the small town of Sterling, just outside Worcester, Massachusetts. She entered the Army Nurse Corps through the Army Student Nurse Corps program at nursing school. She was commissioned after becoming a certified RN, and was sent to basic training at Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas, where she was trained in ER and OR. In June of 1968, she and her husband Al flew together to Vietnam, where he was assigned to MACV in Saigon, and she ran triage at the 3rd Field Hospital nearby. She tells of terrible casualties, and excellent nurses, unique doctors, and a strong team. She also tells of discovering the rainbow drink in Singapore, and loving the fact that they don’t use chopsticks in Thailand. While she served at the 3rd Field, they never lost a single casualty in triage. It was her policy. “… in that triage area, if they came in alive, we kept them alive.”
