Shultz, Roger

Army

"It's selfless service. It's taking an oath. It's being part of something that's really, really special. I'm talking about serving our nation. Signing up to making an individual contribution. Signing up to something greater than yourself."

Description of Interview:

Roger Schultz enlisted in the Iowa National Guard in 1963 to be a tracked vehicle mechanic. After four years in a mechanized company, he went to OCS at the Iowa Military Academy and was commissioned as an infantry lieutenant in a Selected Reserve force in 1967. After completing the infantry officer basic course and jungle school, he deployed to Vietnam as an individual replacement and was assigned to the 2/22nd Infantry, the Triple Deuce, where he served as a rifle platoon leader and then as a recon platoon leader. He was wounded by an RPG on his first day in combat, but recovered quickly and returned to his unit. Schultz speaks proudly of his men, and extols the challenges and excellence of leading men as a lieutenant in combat. He describes the intensity of the bond with the men, and the responsibility of holding their lives “in the palm of your hand.” He remembers continuous hard work, skipping R&R, clearing mines and securing roads, bugles and NVA whistles, courageous young NCOs, Vietnamization (which “didn’t work real well”), and the staggering cost of war.
