The pandemic may have stopped Oxford Valley Elementary School from hosting their annual Veterans Day appreciation breakfast and assembly, but that didn’t stop students from giving back.

This year, first-grade teacher Karen Hearn, who organizes the yearly recognition breakfast, got to work putting together the appreciation event in a different form.

“Since we were unable to hold our annual Oxford Valley Veterans Day appreciation breakfast and assembly, we still wanted our vets to know we care,” said Principal Donna Minnigh.

Students created cards and dropped them off at the school, the school district said.

Some of the cards went to a local veteran who earned a Bronze Star for his service in the Vietnam War. The veteran also received a picture frame and flowers from the school.

Jerry Coffey, part of the school’s custodial staff and a veteran himself, was given cards.

The remaining cards were turned over to be distributed to the nonprofit PA Wounded Warriors for distribution.
